Displacement hull

Displacement hulls are designed to move through the water with as little resistance as possible. The highest speed is determined by the length of the waterline. Most sailboats and larger vessels have displacement hulls.

Planing hull

Planing hull

Planing hull boats partially "lift" and glide on top of the water when they gain sufficient speed. This allows them to achieve significantly higher speed. High-speed motorboats of varying sizes normally have planing hulls.

In addition to higher top speed, a more powerful engine also enables a boat to be loaded heavier without diminishing its seaworthiness. It is also safer in hard weather and currents since engine power can compensate for greater resistance and load.
